About the topic:

This paper analyses wartime sexual violence through the intersection between nationalism and ethnicity, gender, and social movements in northern Myanmar. Complementing the attention that has already been paid in gender studies to the intersection of ethno-nationalism, patriarchy, and sexual violence, this paper’s line of inquiry resolves to focus its attention on how war rape, as a social act, is embedded in gendered power structures that strategically target already marginalized populations at the level of culture and ethnicity. As a reflection of the structural violence underwriting the gender inequality of Myanmar’s nominally democratic transition, the practice of rape that has progressively come to be seen as a crucial – though largely ignored – component of the government’s male-centric political agenda and on-going ceasefire/peace process. Therefore, by concentrating on the intensification of war rape, which has been bound up with the resumption of armed conflict in northern Burma, this paper will analyse the phenomenon of wartime sexual violence by investigating how civil society and community based organisations, particularly Kachin women’s organizations, are increasingly engaging in political struggle by dealing with gender-based issues within their own communities.
