Summer School – Globalization, Social Inclusion and Sustainability in Transitional Myanmar

The Regional Center for Social Science and Sustainable Development (RCSD), Faculty of Social Sciences, Chaing Mai University, invites qualified applicants to participate in a 7-week Summer School titled, “Globalization, Social Inclusion and Sustainability in Transitional Myanmar.” The summer school aims to deepen understanding on how globalization — Myanmar’s integration into regional and global economies — affects the country’s transition, focusing on social inclusion and sustainability and impact on marginalized groups, environment, and governance. The course seeks to enhance foundational skills essential for young researchers in Social Sciences to equip them with analytical tools, research skills, and critical perspectives to assess Myanmar’s transition in the globalized world and to contribute to sustainability and social inclusion.
Applicant Qualifications
The 7-week summer school is designed for third year and final-year bachelor’s students, as well as recent graduates, with academic backgrounds in social sciences, environmental studies, economics, development studies, liberal arts, political science, or public administration and strong English language skills. Students from Mekong countries particularly from Myanmar and Thailand are encouraged to apply for this collaborative learning opportunity. Applications will be considered on their merit, and a balance will be sought to include participants with different regional backgrounds, ethnicities and genders.

About the program
The 7-week interdisciplinary and interactive English program is designed for bachelor level participants. It is run in an intensive format and taught by experienced scholars. Throughout the program, students will examine sustainability from different angles through weekly lectures, seminars, case studies discussion, group work, individual project and field trip. Meeting with peers from the Mekong region especially from Myanmar and Thailand will provide a chance to network. The program will help participants develop critical thinking, research skills, and leadership necessary for contributing to a sustainable, inclusive future and positive social change.
The courses offered are designed for bachelor level study and will focus on issues related to sustainable development and social inclusion. In total, they are equivalent to 9 credits upon completion. Participants will be taught by our experienced course leaders through an interactive academic program in weekly lectures and seminars on contemporary sustainability issues focused on developing and inspiring youth scholars. Through group work, assignments and field trips, students and their classmates will be able to hone their knowledge of sustainability and societal challenges within the social sciences, as well as gain the skills necessary to contribute to sustainability in a transformative future.

Entitlements
The RCSD will fully cover the costs of the course, including meals and field expenses during the program. Those who apply for full funding will also receive travel expenses including air-ticket and accommodation.
Program materials will be provided in electronic format for easy access. Participants who successfully fulfill the course requirements, including both group and individual assessments, will be awarded a certificate of completion.
