Call for Applications: Academic Coordinator for Research Fellowship Program

The Regional Center for Social Science and Sustainable Development (RCSD), Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University, is seeking a highly motivated and academically experienced individual to join our team as an Academic Coordinator for the Research Fellowship Program, which aims to foster research excellence and support Myanmar emerging scholars.  This role offers the opportunity to work closely with academics, research fellows, affiliated scholars, practitioners and other partners. This position is ideal for someone familiar with the Myanmar context and experienced in academic research. He/she should possess interpersonal skills to bring people together and drive forward research and networking agendas.  This position offers a unique opportunity to shape the academic careers of emerging scholars while contributing to the growth of innovative research in various fields.

Location: Chiang Mai, Thailand
Duration: One year, with possibility of extension
Start Date: 1 December 2024

Key Responsibilities

As the Academic Coordinator, he/she will be responsible for coordination of the Research Fellowship Program, including:

  • Managing, coordinating and implementing RCSD’s Myanmar Research Fellowship Program, ensuring program implementation is in accordance with established objectives & timelines.
  • Designing and facilitating academic training workshops that cover essential research competencies, such as data collection, qualitative and quantitative analysis, literature review, and academic writing and publishing, ensuring that fellows receive comprehensive academic support.
  • Collaborating with academic experts to offer targeted training modules on specialized research topics, methodologies, and emerging trends in their fields.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the academic progress of fellows, providing tailored advice during the course of their research processes including academic writing.
  • Support academic activities such as seminars, dialogues, and capacity-building events focused on Myanmar and regional research topics, where fellows receive feedback on their research from senior scholars and improve their work necessary for the final report and publication.
  • Coordinating communication between fellows, mentors, and program staff.

Qualifications and Experiences

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (preferred) or higher in a relevant academic discipline, anthropology, development studies, political science, or a related field, with experience in academic research.
  • At least two-three years of professional experience in research, training, program coordination, preferably in an academic or research-related setting.
  • Ability to provide or facilitate training on research paradigms, methodologies, analysis, and academic writing.
  • Strong familiarity with the Myanmar context and a commitment to supporting inclusive, collaborative visions for the country’s future.
  • Proven understanding of academic research processes, including proposal development, data collection & analysis, and publication.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills and ability to work closely with scholars, researchers, and academic institutions to maintain program quality.
  • Familiarity with academic institutions and scholarly networks is an advantage.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a cross-cultural setting.
  • Strong English language skill is required. Proficiency in Thai and/or Myanmar languages is an asset.
