Students and professors from the School of Ethnology of Yunnan University joined with Chiang Mai University undergraduate and graduate students for the “Sino-Thai” summer school in Chiang Mai from 7-19 August. Students attended lectures with professors of the Faculty of Social Sciences and then plunged into a week of fieldwork in four field sites throughout northern Thailand, focused on investigating agrarian transitions of ethnic communities, accompanied by teams of academic and writing mentors and Thai-Chinese interpreters. Fifteen students from Yunnan University and 5 students from Chiang Mai University visited four selected sites: 1) Mae Ngud, Hod District, Chiang Mai; 2) Organic Farming in Baan Mae Tha, Mae On District, Chiang Mai; 3) Coffee Plantation in Baan Doi Chang, Chiang Rai; and 4) Green Crop cultivation in Baan Pang Hin Fon, Mae Chaem District, Chiang Mai..

Students are now developing their findings into short academic papers exploring the topics and data they gathered, and with the help of academic and writing mentors, will publish their final results in the next (fourth!) edition of the Sino-Thai research monograph, jointly published by the Yunnan University School of Ethnology, RCSD, and the Faculty of Social Sciences.
