This paper seeks to make a critical contribution to the developing policy environment by examining the attitude of sex workers towards AIDS in three different work contexts in a small town in the southeastern part of Yunnan Province, an area that has been the center of China’s emerging HIV/AIDS epidemic. By assessing how sex workers understand and interpret the meaning of HIV/AIDS and take measures to prevent infections in light of the local social and political context, this study seeks to build on and improve existing prevention efforts.
