Workshop: Ecological Sound Design

Special workshop in ecological sound design with Csaba Hajnoczy from the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest, held 10-11th August (whole day and evening) at the Subaltern Meeting Room, Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University. A listening session (reviewing results of the workshop) will also be held on 13 August. The workshop is limited to 10-12 participants total. Please apply online here; we request applicants submit a 200-word statement of purpose and their cv.

The workshop aims at making and editing field recordings, both in urban and natural environments. We will practice listening exercises and soundwalks.

A group of 10-12 participants will create a short sound etude based on field recordings, individually or in a small group. The context of recording will be “favorite sounds of Chiang Mai (and surroundings).” We will try to address the question, “what can be approched by sound?” (social issues, noise problems, animal species, etc.)

Requirements
Participants will need laptops, recording equipment (Zoom or other recorders, or mobile phones), headphones. Knowledge of a Digital Audio Workstation (Ableton Live, Reaper, FL Studio, Logic etc.) is an advantage, but not a prerequisite. The workshop will cover the basic use of tools.
