Sino-Thai Explorations: Agricultural Transition of Ethnic Groups and Livelihoods

This publication is now the third in an annual collection of papers from ethnology students at Yunnan University, this time examining how ethnic communities of Northern Thailand are navigating the transformation of their agricultural livelihoods. The articles contained here are the product of a collaborative summer school hosted by Chiang Mai University in August 2024, where selected students from Yunnan and Chiang Mai Universities conducted fieldwork in multiple communities under the guidance of academic mentors from both universities. The students have produced a series of interesting case studies of struggles with infrastructure, the shift from opium to coffee, and the effects of changing livelihoods and economies on culture and community. This publication hopes to open critical engagement within the region and the unique perspective of Chinese anthropologists-in-training.
