This publication presents a collection of collaborative research papers from social science students at Yunnan University and Chiang Mai University examining how ethnic communities of northern Thailand are navigating the transformation of their agricultural livelihoods. The articles compiled here are
the product of a summer school program hosted by Chiang Mai University in August 2025 during which selected students from the two universities conducted fieldwork in multiple communities under the guidance of international academic mentors.
The students have produced a series of illuminating case studies of villagers’ struggles with infrastructure and the environment, the shift from illicit opium to licit crops, and the effects of changing livelihoods and economies on culture and community. This volume aims to contribute to critical engage-
ment within the region informed by the unique perspective of Chinese social scientists-in-training.
