Yong People on the Move: Making a New Homeland

This book is a pioneer work that tells the “history from below” of the Yong, one of the ethnic people of northern Thailand with a unique history of migration, resettlement, and integration with the city-states of Lanna, and later into the “geo-body” of Thailand. This first ever translation into English makes this history for the first time accessible to foreign scholars of ethnicity, migration, culture and identity, history and Thai studies, opening a new alternative perspective on the history of the North. This translation also invites further research and scholarship that tackles the larger questions of what Thai, northern, “Lanna” and Yong culture, societies, and identities mean. This is the final culmination of a long labor of love by its author, Sawaeng Malasaem and the translation and editorial team of Chayan Vaddahanphuti, Chanida Puranapun and Charlotte Trenk-Hinterberger.
